Gary Elementary School originated in 1907 when Horace Chilton sold two acres to the Tyler school system. It is named in honor of Franklin Gary, a notable former Tyler citizen and supporter of public education. The school is located across Chilton Street (then Anne Street) from Horace’s home (1888 Chilton-Lipstate-Taylor House) which recently received a historical marker. In 1908 the first building was constructed on the site. It contained eight classrooms and was built of stone, brick and wood. The 1908 building lasted until 1924, it was demolished and salvaged wood joists and flooring was re-used in the 1924 Tyler High School Science Building (today is the Caldwell Elementary Arts Academy located on College Street).
Mark has completed several projects at Gary Elementary over the years including remodels, use conversion, technology, parking and even an outdoor archaeology simulation laboratory.Type your paragraph here.
